Many schools are sending in data about how many items can be carried 20m in 2minutes, then 4 and 6 minutes. Data is sent in and the Mathematics Association of Victoria will collate the results so that we can use the data in further maths lessons. The class enjoyed the physical activity.

The class was a bit concerned to know that they would be doing maths ALL day!
We started outside with goal kicking to create some statistics we could work with. We used fractions and percentages to compare our top goal kickers. Tucker and Ruby were our champions. We spent a good hour investigating the maths in the final AFL ladder.

We then created our own times tables ladder and began a competition. Sam is currently on top of the ladder!

Our main focus in Maths is multiplication. We have been practising our skills by multiplying by multiples of ten. We are also trying different strategies to multiply by 2 digit numbers. We used Excel to partition numbers and then multiply them; now we are using tables such as in this animation.
The animation may not work if you are using Internet Explorer; if not try another browser such as Mozilla or Chrome.

Josh you found 16 oz of gold today – your partner Sam is looking after your claim for you. He appears to be an honourable gentleman. The assay price was 3 pounds per ounce but Sam didn’t sell any of your gold. Things are pretty tough on the goldifelds – the commissioner keeps raising the license fee and troopers keep doing license checks. Some people are giving up their claims and buying local businesses to try to make money.

Such a hectic time of year but them I don’t know when the quiet times are.
This term we are looking at the effects of the Gold Rush on Australia. The students have all researched and created characters for our Gold Game. We pretend that we are on the goldfields and we mine for gold. As we do we learn about the conditions on the goldfileds at Ballarat in the 1850’s. all of our experiences are written in authentic journals created by the students for their characters.
